The introductory issue of ta[kh]zine looks into the rise of the UNEM (National Union of Moroccan Students) in Morocco and the diaspora as well as the gatherings they organized around cinema. In the 1970s and 80s, Moroccan cine-clubs played a major role in film education. However, as they were closely linked to leftist opposition groups at the time, they began to recede alongside the political organisations they were tied to after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The phenomenon of cine-clubs had, for many years, mobilized a number of students with different backgrounds, across a number of regions of the country. At the time, the student bodies of universities also hosted “Halakiat" within university campuses to discuss the films but also society at large.

Reprise turns to Al Assifa, a politicized French theatre group that emerged from the struggles of the MTA (Movement of Arab Workers), the Palestinian cause, anti-colonial movements, and campaigns for workers’ and immigrant rights. Their first initiative was to publish a weekly newspaper titled Al Assifa, The Voice of Arab Workers, distributed in Arab cafés in Paris, addressing issues pertaining to the condition of immigrants. The group quickly changed their strategy and developed a “theatrical newspaper,” engaging their audience through plays and oral storytelling; radio cassettes were also used to circulate their work among communities of Maghrebi origin in several French cities.
